Help
Fulmaire is a chart of the water you have paddled: sea, lake and river, kayak, canoe, SUP and more. It celebrates where you have been. It never tells you where to go.
Getting started
Six steps. Every one can be skipped, and every switch can be turned off again later. New accounts start private: nothing of yours is on the World map until you choose.
- Add a paddle Tap + and send a .fit, .gpx or .tcx file from your watch or phone, or record one on the phone. Add paddles
- See your chart The water you covered turns magenta on your Map. Tap it to see where you were and what you earned.
- Join your club Find it in Leagues under "Find a club" and ask to join, or open the link a member sends you. If the club's admin lets each new member in, you wait for them to do so. Your paddles then count for the club too. Paddles you added before joining count for no club until you count them for yours, once, in Leagues. Open Leagues
- Put your water on the World map Switch on Compete for water. You then hold the water you paddle, appear in the leagues and count for your club. Other paddlers see your map name and the water you hold, six hours after you finish, and never the water around your usual put-ins. Open Competing
- Choose your name and open your profile You are shown as an alias like "Paddler 4821" until you pick your own alias or show your handle. A public profile lets other paddlers see the water you hold, your awards and your totals. Your paddles, their dates and your routes stay yours. Open Name and avatar
- Bring in your past paddles Send a whole Garmin, Strava or Apple Health export at once, or connect a watch or app so new paddles arrive by themselves. Bring in your history or open Watches and apps
One more, if you would like it: a weekly email on Monday mornings with your week on the water. It is off until you switch it on. Open Weekly email
And if you run a club or go on trips, notifications on your phone tell you when someone asks to join, when you are let in, and when a trip is new or changes. Nothing is sent until you allow it. Open Notifications
Signed out? Sign in first; the links above open the right place once you are in.
How it works
How do I claim water?
- The map is divided into small hexagonal cells, each about 65 metres across a side. Every cell your track passes through is added to your chart.
- If you compete, you hold a cell when you are the most recent competing paddler there. Another competing paddler who paddles it after you takes it over. Your upload says when you took cells from someone.
- Your own chart never shrinks: losing a hold does not remove the water from your map or take away an award.
- Order is by when you paddled, not when you uploaded, so an old paddle uploaded today counts on the day it happened.
What does "first" mean?
- You are first on a cell when nobody recorded it before you. That counts whether or not you compete.
- FIT files and paddles sent by a connected app keep their own date. A GPX or TCX file is a text file anyone can re-date, so for being first it counts as no older than 30 days before you uploaded it. On water nobody else has recorded it is still first.
Why don't my paddles show to others straight away?
Nothing you paddle reaches anyone else until six hours after the paddle. That covers the World map, standings and leagues, club holds and club awards, trips, river times, "paddled with" and public profiles. Your own map shows everything at once.
What does Compete for water do?
- It is off when you join. While it is off your water is not on the World map, you hold no cells, nobody can take anything, and you are on no league or club hold. Your own map and awards are the same either way.
- Switch it on to hold water, appear in Standings and the leagues, and count for your club. Switch it off again whenever you like.
- It is under You, then Competing.
How do the leagues work?
- Leagues has Territory (water held, firsts and awards), Distance, Islands, Lakes, Headlands and River boards.
- Distance, Islands, Lakes and Headlands run for the week (from Monday), the month, the year and all time. Islands counts how many different islands you circumnavigated; Lakes and Headlands, how many you went round. Never which.
- Each board can rank paddlers or clubs; clubs by their total or per paddler.
- Only paddlers who compete are listed, by their map name. The top 20 show, plus your own row.
- River boards: one for each river stretch, run downstream, with each paddler's best time and no date. You see a stretch's board once you have paddled it. Your time shows to others only if you compete and switch on "Show my best river times".
How are awards earned?
- Over two hundred awards, for places, variety, habit, distance, firsts, paddling with others, looking after the water, and complete collections. They are counted from your paddles; there is nothing to enter.
- An award is never taken back, not even when you delete the paddle that earned it. There are no streaks and no deadlines.
- Island circumnavigations must go all the way round and stay close to the island. A wide loop of the water around it counts as a circuit, not a circumnavigation. Islands in lakes count too, from paddles added from now on.
- Lakes: a full circuit close to the shore of an enclosed water.
- Headlands: pass within a kilometre of the tip and round it, turning at least a quarter circle on the seaward side. Out and back, or across the neck, does not count.
- Clubs have awards of their own, on the club's page.
- Every award has its own page saying what counts, which anyone can read: all the awards.
Which places does Fulmaire know?
- Ireland, North and South: counties (in the North, council districts), islands, lakes and headlands.
- Great Britain: England's counties and unitary councils, the counties of Wales and Scotland's council areas, with their islands and headlands, and named rivers. A named river counts once you have paddled about a kilometre along it; crossing its mouth does not. Lakes for the Lakes board and the whole-coast awards are Irish for now.
- Everywhere else: the region and the country, so a first county or region counts anywhere, but there are no islands or headlands yet.
- The coast percentage is of the country you paddled in, so Irish and British coast are counted apart. Kilometres of coast count both.
- Every place comes from government and open data, credited at the foot of the Map.
What is a journey?
- A file recorded in Expedition or battery-saving mode has a position only every few minutes. Fulmaire calls that a journey.
- A journey claims the cell under each recorded position, and your own map joins the positions in order so you can see the trip.
- Tap a position or the dotted line to open the journey. If you know the way you went between two positions, tap the position where it starts and choose Draw a stretch from here. That position turns dark and the next one turns big and pink: tap along your route, then tap the pink one. The water it crosses counts too. Tap the hex beside a position to see who holds it.
- You can remove a journey from your map like any paddle.
Which crafts are there, and can I change one?
- Sea kayak, racing K1, surfski, river or whitewater kayak, open canoe, SUP, outrigger, packraft and rowing. Each has its own speed range, which is how a boat ride is told from a paddle.
- The craft is read from each file where the watch or app recorded it, so one history can mix crafts.
- Change one paddle's craft on its page, or several at once from Paddles with "Change the craft of several paddles".
Privacy and sharing
What are privacy zones?
- A start point you have used more than once is a usual put-in. Water within 1 km of it is hidden from everyone else: the World map, club maps and "first" names.
- Choose 500 m, 1 km, 2 km or 5 km under You, then Privacy. There is no off: the smallest choice is still a zone.
- Hidden water is still yours on your own map and still counts for your awards.
What do other paddlers see of me?
- Your map name: an alias like "Paddler 4821" unless you type your own alias or choose to show your handle. Change it under You, Name and avatar.
- If you compete: the water you hold, your awards and your place in the leagues, under that name.
- A public profile is off until you switch on "Show my profile to other paddlers". It shows the water you hold outside your privacy zones, your awards and your totals.
- An awards page is off until you choose who can open it, under You, Name and avatar, "My awards page": "My club's members" (signed in, in a club with you) or "Anyone with the link". They see your map name, your awards with the day each was earned, your km and your firsts, counted six hours late and leaving out the water round your usual put-ins. It has no map and no places, and it is not listed on Google.
- Never shown to anyone: your paddles, their dates, your routes, your heat map and your notes.
- A photo avatar shows only while the map shows your handle, so a face never undoes an alias.
What is "Show who I paddled with"?
If you and another paddler both switch it on, and you recorded the same water at the same time, each of you sees the other's map name on that paddle, six hours after you both finish. It never names anyone who has not switched it on. It is under You, Privacy.
What happens to sightings I record?
- Record wildlife, a coastal or river feature, an invasive plant, litter or a hazard: along your track, by hand on the map, or with "Mark a sighting here".
- Other paddlers never see your sightings.
- "Share my sightings, without my name", under You, Privacy, decides whether what you saw, where and when is shared with wildlife, environmental and heritage recording groups. A shared record never carries your name, nothing recorded around your usual put-ins is shared, and nothing before six hours have passed. The privacy notice has the detail.
Who sees the notes on my paddles?
Only you. A paddle's title and note are never shown to anyone else.
Can I add a note to a hex, or say a hex isn't water?
- Tap any hex you have paddled, on My map or the World map, and choose "Add a note": anything worth knowing about that water, in your own words. If it is a coastal feature such as a cave or an arch, you can also say which, how big, and at what tide a boat can reach it. Up to three photos go with a note; they are kept without the camera's position or time.
- Only you see your notes. They are listed with your sightings, and shown again when you tap the hex. Remove one at any time.
- A track sometimes drifts over a car park or a field. Tap the hex and choose "Not water?" to tell Fulmaire. If it is not water, it stops counting for anyone: it leaves the maps, the holds and the leagues, and nobody is told who reported it. Awards already earned stay.
Adding paddles
Which files can I add, and how big?
- .fit, .gpx and .tcx files, from any watch or app, one or many at a time. A Garmin, Strava or Apple Health export .zip goes in whole, and so does any .zip of those files.
- Up to 100 MB per file and 3 GB per export. Each account keeps up to 2 GB of original files; paddles sent by a connected app do not count towards that. If you need more, email support@fulmaire.com.
- Up to 1,000 files an hour, other sports included. If you choose more than that at once, Fulmaire pauses, says for how long, and carries on by itself while the page stays open.
- On an Android phone with the Fulmaire app from Google Play, you can also share a file to it from another app. Phones are not offered a home-screen copy of the website any more; if you added one earlier on Android, remove it before installing the app.
- Runs, rides, swims and other sports are left out. If your watch called a paddle something else, Fulmaire says so and lets you choose the craft and send it again. In a history import those files are listed for you to check.
How do I bring in years of paddles?
- Ask Garmin or Strava for your data export, or export your data from the Health app on an iPhone, then drop the .zip into Add paddles without opening it. Paddles go in oldest first, other sports are skipped, and paddles already on your map are not added twice.
- Histories are read one at a time. If someone else's is being read, yours waits its turn and starts by itself, even if you leave the page.
- From an Apple Watch, only workouts recorded outdoors with GPS have a route. Paddling, rowing, surfing and water sports workouts are read as paddles; walks, runs and other workouts are left out.
- Polar, COROS, Suunto, Paddle Logger, Navionics and phone GPS apps save one paddle at a time: export each as .gpx, .fit or .tcx and add them together.
- The history page has the steps for each.
Can I record on my phone?
- Yes: Add, then record a paddle. In a web browser Fulmaire must stay open on screen. In the Android app it carries on with the screen off and shows a notification while it records.
- Every position is kept on the phone as it arrives, and the paddle is sent when you stop, or when you have signal again.
Can new paddles arrive by themselves?
- Under You, Watches and apps lists the watches and apps you can connect. Connect once, and each new paddle arrives when your watch syncs.
- For a Garmin watch with the Fulmaire data field: get a code there, type it into the field's settings in the Garmin Connect app, and add the field to a screen of your Kayak activity.
- Disconnecting stops new paddles; the ones already here stay.
Clubs and trips
How do clubs work?
- "Find a club" in Leagues lists clubs by name and number of members, never who is in them. Ask to join and the club's admin lets you in, or open a join link a member sends you. When you ask, add your name: the admin sees only your map name otherwise, and only they see what you write.
- "Start a club" makes you its admin, with a join link to share. The link lets people straight in unless the admin ticks "Ask me before letting in anyone with the link" in Club settings. Then opening the link asks to join, and the admin lets each person in or says no on the club page. When you are let in, a note on My water says so until you open the club or tap OK.
- A join link sent in WhatsApp, Messenger or a text shows the club's name and how many are in it, so people can see what they are joining. It never shows who is in the club or where it paddles. A trip's link shows only that it is a trip with your club, not its title, place or day.
- If you compete, your paddles also hold water for the club. If you are in more than one club, you choose which one your paddles count for from now on.
- Paddles you added before you joined a club count for no club. Once, in Leagues under your clubs, you can count all of them for the club you paddle for. Paddles already counted for a club or a trip stay where they are. Each cell goes to the club that paddled it last, by paddle time, so your older paddles only hold water no club has paddled since. It cannot be undone, and it does not move with you if you change club later.
- If you leave, the water you paddled for the club stays with it, and the club stops seeing where you paddle.
- The club's admin can remove a member in Club settings, under Invite on the club page: choose who, tap Remove, then Yes, remove. For example, someone who was sent the join link by mistake. It works like leaving: what they paddled for the club stays with it. To stop them coming back with the same link, the admin makes a new one in Club settings.
- If a member's photo or name, or the club's name, should not be there, open "Report a photo or name" on the club page. Only the person running Fulmaire reads it, and nobody is told who reported. If it comes down, the person it is about is told why: a photo goes back to a drawn avatar, a name is replaced by a new map alias, and a club name becomes "Unnamed club" until its admin renames it.
What is a club trip?
- Any member can plan a trip. The club sees its title, the day and how many are going; the place, the plan and the chat are for those going.
- The chat closes a day after the trip and is deleted 48 hours after that. Any message can be reported.
- The trip's organiser or the club's admin can cancel it with "Cancel this trip" on its page, any time before it ends. Everyone going sees it marked cancelled, here and on the club's page, and paddles in that time count as ordinary paddles, not for the trip. A cancelled trip can't be put back on; plan a new one instead.
- Once a trip is cancelled, the same people can delete it with "Delete this trip". Its plan, who was going and its chat are gone for good, and it leaves the club's list.
- "Add to calendar" saves the trip to your own calendar. Fulmaire sends no reminders.
- Paddles during the trip count for it, and the trip's page shows what everyone covered.
Your account
How do I sign in?
- Continue with Google if you have a Google account. You never give Fulmaire a password.
- Continue with email if you would rather not use Google, or do not have it, where the button is shown. Type your address, and Fulmaire emails you a six-digit code. Type the code on the same page. It works once, for 15 minutes. No email? Look in your spam folder, then send another.
- Either way, a new address goes on to pick a handle and accept the terms. If you already joined with Google, a code sent to the same address signs you in to the same account, with the same map.
- Signing out on one phone or computer leaves the others signed in.
Can I share my paddling?
"Your year on the water", on the You page, shows your months, new places and firsts, with a picture to share. "Share a card of my paddling" makes a card of your numbers, with no map. When you share either one, a link to Fulmaire goes with it, so whoever you send it to can find it.
Is there a Fulmaire shop?
Yes. "Shop" in the menu (at the foot of the screen on a phone), or "Fulmaire shop" on the You page, opens the shop in a new tab. It sells tees for Fulmaire awards, and anyone can buy one: you do not need to have earned the award. Each shirt is printed when you order it.
What notifications does Fulmaire send?
- None until you tap "Allow on this phone" under You, then Notifications, and say yes when your phone asks. "Send a test" shows one straight away, so you know they arrive.
- Then a switch for each of these, all on to begin with:
- Someone asks to join a club you run. It says how many are asking, so nobody is left waiting.
- You're let into a club.
- A paddle from your watch or a linked app is in, with its distance and any new awards. Paddles you add yourself don't send one.
- A new trip for your club, or a change to one you're going on, including one called off.
- They say how many and which club, never a person's name or a place, because they show on your lock screen.
- At most one of each kind an hour; several at once become one. Nothing between 10pm and 7am, Irish time: those wait until morning.
- They work in the Fulmaire app on Android and in Chrome. On an iPhone they will come with the iPhone app.
- "Stop on this phone" turns them all off for that phone. Each phone you allow is set up on its own.
- Fulmaire never sends a notification to suggest where to paddle or to sell you anything.
What is the weekly email?
- Off until you tick "Send me a weekly email" under You, then Weekly email. It goes to the address you sign in with.
- Monday mornings, Irish time: how many paddles you did the week before, how far and for how long, and any new awards. If you are in a club, the club's week in numbers only: paddles, members out and distance, never who or where.
- At most one a week. A week with nothing new sends nothing.
- Every email has a link to stop it with one click, and you can switch it off under You at any time.
What are forecasts?
A premium feature, shown on the You page for accounts that have it: wind, sea and tide for the places you keep, a few days ahead. They are not for navigation; always check official forecasts before you go.
- Your places sit along the top in the order you kept them. Tap one to see its forecast, or "+ Add a place" to search for a town, beach, bay, harbour or headland by name, pick a put-in, or tap a point on the map. You can move the pin before you keep it. One place shows at a time.
- The first hour of the forecast comes first: wind and gusts, waves, swell, and the next high or low water.
- A tab for each day shows that day's lightest and strongest wind.
- The hours are a table you swipe sideways, one column an hour: a line for the wind and gusts, then wind, gusts, direction, waves, swell, its period and direction, the tidal stream where there is one, and the tide. Arrows point the way the wind blows and the water moves. Wind and wave numbers are shaded lighter for less and darker for more; the shading means nothing else.
- On a lake or inland, you see the wind only.
- Where they come from: in Ireland, wind from Met Éireann and waves and tide times from the Marine Institute; in Great Britain, wind from MET Norway, and waves, the tide and tidal streams from the E.U. Copernicus Marine Service, with tide times from the UK Hydrographic Office where Fulmaire has them; everywhere else, and for anything those cannot give, Open-Meteo. Each forecast names its sources underneath.
How do I delete a paddle, my account, or download my data?
- A paddle: open it from Paddles and remove it. Its file is deleted and any water you held there goes back to whoever paddled it before you. Awards you earned stay.
- Your data: You, Account, "Download my data" (everything Fulmaire holds about you) and "Download my original files" (every file you sent).
- Your account: You, Account, Delete account. It asks you to type your handle, then erases every paddle, file and claim. It cannot be undone.
